OrCam MyEye attaches to a wearer’s eyeglasses and turns selected visual information into spoken audio. It can read text aloud; selected versions can also recognize saved faces, identify products, and recognize currency. OrCam Read is a handheld device that reads printed material and screen text aloud.

These functions can help a user access a menu, label, letter, or short passage. They do not restore sight, diagnose a condition, or guarantee that every captured word or object will be recognized correctly. Results depend on factors such as framing, lighting, print quality, and the particular device version.

MyEye: a wearable camera

MyEye clips onto glasses and uses a small camera to capture text when the user activates reading by touch, gesture, or voice command, depending on the model and settings. The device then speaks the captured words through its speaker or a connected audio device. MyEye reading instructions explain how to activate text reading. MyEye 2 Pro can recognize saved faces, identify product barcodes, and read banknotes.

Face recognition is a user-assistance feature, not a general identity service. The user must register a person for later recognition, and the device’s output should be treated as a prompt for the user rather than proof of identity. Available recognition functions depend on the MyEye version.

Read: a portable text reader

OrCam Read is a handheld smart camera for reading. The user points it at text and presses a button; a laser indicator can help select a passage or page, and the device converts the image into speech. OrCam Read works without an internet connection. It is designed to read, rather than provide the broader wearable recognition features offered by some MyEye versions.

Neither device is a treatment for dyslexia, cognitive impairment, or vision loss. They provide access tools: text-to-speech and, on selected models, recognition features. A reader can compare their needs and the device’s functions with accessible phone or computer software before choosing equipment.

OrCam was founded by Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram, who also founded Mobileye. For another Israeli medical technology example, see the development of PillCam.
