Hamas systematically and deliberately used hospitals, mosques, schools, and UN-run facilities as operational bases, weapons depots, tunnel entry points, and command-and-control nodes, a strategy rooted in the calculated exploitation of international humanitarian law's protections for civilian sites. This tactic, designed to maximize political and media costs for any Israeli military response, has been confirmed not only by Israeli intelligence and the IDF, but by American intelligence officials, the European Union, and even left-leaning Israeli media.
The Evidence Is Overwhelming and Multi-Sourced
The most extensively documented case is Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, Gaza's largest medical complex. When IDF forces entered the facility in November 2023, they discovered weapons caches in the MRI unit, a Hamas tunnel shaft beneath the hospital compound, a vehicle on hospital grounds loaded with weapons, and a 560-foot reinforced concrete tunnel equipped with electrical sockets, power lines, and ventilation systems — infrastructure built expressly to allow Hamas operatives to move unseen beneath a functioning hospital.
