UN Women treats Gaza birth percentages as vital statistics

UN Women Deputy Executive Director Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda stated Gaza live-birth and miscarriage percentages as established outcomes of hospital destruction. The briefing named no producer, baseline, or denominator, and it omitted Hamas’s militarization of those hospitals.

What UN Women said

In Gaza, the destruction of hospitals and maternity facilities, and the collapse of access to essential supplies, have contributed to a 41 per cent decrease in live births and a 300 per cent increase in miscarriages.

Who spoke

On 26 October 2026, Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, UN Women Deputy Executive Director, delivered prepared remarks at United Nations Headquarters while presenting the Secretary-General’s annual women, peace and security report, issued as S/2026/758. The UN spokesperson’s office billed her that day as a guest to present the report. UN News then restated her Gaza percentages as established fact. UN Women is an advocacy secretariat. It is not a civil registry, not a hospital examiner, and not a court. The letterhead does not convert a press line into a census.

What the percentages do not mean

Her wording presents a 41 per cent drop in live births and a 300 per cent rise in miscarriages as measured outcomes to which “the destruction of hospitals and maternity facilities, and the collapse of access to essential supplies, have contributed.” That sentence treats two ratios as counted, and it treats damage to hospitals as a demonstrated cause. The posted remarks and the UN News write-up give those percentages with no data producer, no baseline year, no comparison window, and no population. They do not say whether “live births” means deliveries logged in remaining maternity wards, civil registrations that collapsed in wartime, or some other series. They do not define miscarriage or give a sample. A percentage without a denominator is a slogan. A causal “have contributed to” without a method is a political talking point dressed as epidemiology.

A May 2026 briefing note hosted by the Jewish Virtual Library records a recurring UN practice it calls data-laundering: disseminating information from Hamas-controlled authorities as authoritative UN data. UN Women’s own April 2026 Gaza advocacy brief cites fatality series from a Health Cluster dashboard and from Tech for Palestine drawing on the ministry of health in Gaza. That ministry is an organ of the Islamist terror regime, not a medical examiner. Repeating two round percentages in New York does not raise their grade.

What the briefing omitted

October 7 opened this war. Hamas-led terrorists murdered 1,195 people in Israel, a total later revised from early higher counts, and abducted 251, according to the Jewish Virtual Library’s casualty record. Gumbonzvanda’s hospital sentence does not name Hamas. It does not name the regime that ran Gaza’s health system. It does not name the hostages taken into Gaza, including signs of captivity the IDF reported on the basement floor of Rantisi Hospital.

NGO Monitor’s September 2025 report on internal Hamas ministry papers from 2020 records that Hamas treated health facilities as military assets: sites where wounded operatives who “hold sensitive positions in the resistance” were gathered, and “gathering for many commanders of the movement and the government in times of escalation.” The Jerusalem Post reported the IDF’s January 2024 finding of a 250-meter tunnel system beneath Shifa Hospital, described as a Hamas command center. The IDF hospital dossier documents tunnels, weapons, and fuel theft at medical sites, including the Indonesian Hospital. Those facts convert “destruction of hospitals” from a one-sided targeting claim into a record of self-defense against an enemy that stripped hospitals of protected status. Israel’s COGAT aid portal publishes ongoing medical and humanitarian facilitation into Gaza. Her “collapse of access to essential supplies” erases diversion, embedding, and the war Hamas started.

She took two unattributed percentages, hung them on hospital ruins, and used a UN Women briefing as a substitute for a census and a targeting finding.
