Myth

Palestinians deserve East Jerusalem as their national capital.

Fact

Jerusalem is the eternal and undivided capital of the State of Israel, a status rooted in 3,000 years of Jewish history and codified in Israeli law. Under Israeli sovereignty, the city is open to all faiths, whereas the previous illegal Jordanian occupation resulted in the destruction of Jewish holy sites and the exclusion of Jews from their holiest places [1], [3].

The Historical and Legal Reality of Unified Jerusalem

The claim that the eastern neighborhoods of Jerusalem belong to a foreign entity is a modern political invention designed to delegitimize Jewish sovereignty in their ancestral homeland. Jerusalem has served as the spiritual, cultural, and political center of the Jewish people for over three millennia, long before the rise of Islam or the arrival of Arab settlers in the region. The city was established as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel by King David around 1000 BCE, and it remained the focal point of Jewish national life through the First and Second Temple periods. Archaeological evidence, including the Western Wall, the City of David, and countless Hebrew inscriptions, provides irrefutable proof of this continuous Jewish presence.

In contrast, Jerusalem was never the capital of any Arab or Muslim state. During the centuries of Ottoman and later British rule, it was treated as a provincial backwater. The concept of "East Jerusalem" as a separate entity only emerged as a result of the 1948 War of Independence, when the Arab Legion of Jordan illegally invaded and occupied the eastern part of the city, including the Old City and the Jewish Quarter. This occupation was never recognized by the international community, with the exception of Britain and Pakistan. During the 19 years of Jordanian rule (1948–1967), Jews were ethnically cleansed from the area, 58 synagogues were destroyed, and Jewish gravestones on the Mount of Olives were used to pave roads and latrines. This period of Jordanian control was a historical anomaly characterized by the desecration of holy sites and the denial of religious freedom [1], [2].

The 1967 Liberation and Unification

Israel’s sovereignty over the entirety of Jerusalem was restored during the Six-Day War in 1967. This was a defensive war launched after Arab nations, led by Egypt and Syria, mobilized for the explicit purpose of annihilating the Jewish state. When Jordan joined the attack by shelling Israeli neighborhoods in West Jerusalem, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded, liberating the Old City and reuniting the capital. This act was not an "occupation" but the recovery of territory to which Israel had the superior legal and historical claim under international law, particularly the principle of uti possidetis juris, which dictates that a new state inherits the boundaries of the preceding administrative entity-in this case, the British Mandate for Palestine [2].

Following the war, Israel immediately extended its law, jurisdiction, and administration to the liberated areas, ensuring that the city would never again be divided by barbed wire and snipers. In 1980, the Knesset passed the "Basic Law: Jerusalem, Capital of Israel," which declared that "Jerusalem, complete and united, is the capital of Israel." This law protects the holy places of all religions and guarantees access to them, a stark contrast to the exclusion practiced under Arab rule [1].

Political Islam and the Weaponization of Jerusalem

The demand for Jerusalem as a capital for Arab settlers is a central component of Political Islam’s strategy to dismantle the Jewish state. Within the civilizational system of Islam, Jerusalem is not merely a city but a tool for ideological mobilization. Political Islam, derived from the Quran, Sira, and Hadith, views any land once under Muslim control as Waqf (an Islamic endowment) that must be reclaimed through Jihad. The narrative surrounding the Al-Aqsa Mosque is frequently used to incite violence and justify terror campaigns against Israeli citizens.

In this context, a mosque is not merely a place of worship but serves as a political and military center. During the "Iron Swords War" and previous conflicts, terror groups like Hamas and the IRGC-backed militias have used holy sites in Jerusalem as bases for organizing riots, stockpiling weapons, and launching attacks [3]. This behavior reflects the Islamic doctrine of dualism, where religious symbols are strategically redefined to advance political and military goals. The claim to Jerusalem is thus not about "human rights" or "national self-determination" in the Western sense, but about the expansion of Islamic rule and the eventual submission of the Jewish people [4].

"The Palestinians will always be our neighbors... but Jerusalem is our eternal and united capital." - Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon [1]

The Role of the Left as 'Useful Idiots'

The global left, which frequently allies with Iran’s network of global Jihad and Political Islam, plays a critical role in promoting the myth of a divided Jerusalem. By adopting the terminology of "occupation" and "East Jerusalem," left-leaning organizations and Western governments act as "useful idiots" for antisemitic regimes. These actors prioritize the demands of Muslim-Arab organizations over the documented historical rights and security needs of the Jewish state. Their support for a Palestinian capital in Jerusalem ignores the reality that such a move would turn the heart of Israel into a front line for Iranian proxy forces, similar to the situation in Gaza [4], [5].

The left's advocacy for the division of Jerusalem is often framed as a "two-state solution," yet history shows that every Israeli concession has been met with increased Jihad. The 2000 Camp David summit, where Israel offered unprecedented compromises on Jerusalem, was answered by Yasser Arafat with the Second Intifada-a campaign of suicide bombings and mass murder [4]. This pattern demonstrates that the goal of the Arab leadership is not a state alongside Israel, but the destruction of Israel itself, with Jerusalem as the ultimate prize.

Religious Freedom and Civil Rights Under Israeli Sovereignty

Israel is the only power in the history of the Middle East to have guaranteed full religious freedom and access to holy sites for all faiths in Jerusalem. Under Israeli sovereignty, Christians, Muslims, and Jews are all free to worship. This is a direct rejection of the Sharia-based legal systems prevalent in neighboring Arab states, which view non-Muslims (Kafirs) as inferior and subject to discriminatory laws. In a future Arab-controlled Jerusalem, the rights of religious minorities and women would be governed by Sharia, which does not recognize the equality principles found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Furthermore, the Arab residents of Jerusalem enjoy social benefits, healthcare, and economic opportunities provided by the Israeli state-rights they would lose under the corrupt and authoritarian self-governing Arab administration in Judea and Samaria. Polls consistently show that many Arab residents of Jerusalem would prefer to remain under Israeli sovereignty rather than live under a Palestinian terror regime [6].

The Existential Danger of Division

Dividing Jerusalem would create a security catastrophe. The high ground of the city overlooks Israel’s coastal plain and its primary international airport. Handing these areas to an Islamist terror regime would allow Iranian proxies to paralyze the Israeli economy and threaten the lives of millions. The experience of the Gaza withdrawal in 2005, which resulted in the establishment of a Hamas terror base, serves as a definitive warning: territorial concessions to Political Islam do not bring peace; they bring war [4], [3].

The international community's pressure on Israel to divide its capital is a double standard not applied to any other democratic nation. No other country is told that its historical and legal capital must be shared with a hostile entity that seeks its annihilation. Israel’s security policy, including the maintenance of defensive barriers and security checkpoints, is a lawful and necessary response to the ongoing Muslim-Arab Jihad campaign that targets civilians in the heart of the city [2].
