# AIU schools and Jewish modernization

*Alliance Israélite Universelle schools brought modern, largely French-language education to Jewish communities from Baghdad to Iran. They expanded access to secular subjects and girls’ schooling while reshaping language, work, and religious education in different ways from place to place.*

Founded in Paris in 1860, the Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU) built schools that combined modern subjects with Jewish education. Its network gave many Jewish children in the Middle East access to French-language instruction, literacy, and new routes into commerce and professional work. The schools’ reach and effects differed between communities.

## Schools spread from Baghdad to Iran

The first AIU school in Baghdad opened in 1865. In Iran, schools followed in Tehran in 1898, Hamadan in 1900, Isfahan in 1901, Shiraz and Sanandaj in 1903, and Kermanshah in 1904. The [Encyclopaedia Iranica history](https://www.iranicaonline.org/articles/alliance-israelite-universelle/) traces their growth and notes that the old educational methods were gradually supplemented by a European model. The network taught girls as well as boys, an important opportunity in communities where girls’ access to formal schooling had often been limited.

## French, Jewish, and local learning

French was a central language of instruction, alongside Jewish religious content and practical subjects. Students could gain literacy and skills useful in trade, administration, and further study. The schools also connected communities to a transnational Jewish organization and its Paris headquarters. That connection could strengthen communal resources while also introducing cultural expectations shaped in Europe. AIU education did not erase local languages or religious life, and families made varied choices about enrollment.

## Change without a single outcome

Graduates included teachers, professionals, and merchants, but schooling did not produce one uniform path to social mobility. Some families valued the new curriculum; others worried about French cultural influence or the place of traditional study. The organization’s record in [AIU’s institutional history](https://www.aiu.org/en/notre-histoire-0) describes its program as modern French-language education for boys and girls alongside Jewish values. The most accurate picture is a mixed one: AIU broadened educational opportunity and connected Jewish communities across borders, while its influence was negotiated locally.
