# Iron Beam: Israel’s Laser Air Defense

*Iron Beam is a high-power laser air-defense system developed by Israel’s DDR&D and Rafael, with Elbit supplying the laser source. It intercepted rockets, mortars and UAVs in tests and entered IDF service in December 2025.*

Iron Beam is Israel’s high-power laser system for intercepting aerial threats. The Ministry of Defense said on December 28, 2025 that the first system had been delivered to the IDF after a test series that intercepted rockets, mortars and unmanned aircraft. It joins Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow as a complementary layer.

## What the system has demonstrated

Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development led the program with Rafael as primary contractor. Elbit Systems is responsible for the laser source; other industrial partners include SCD and Shafir Systems. Tests in a full operational configuration were completed in 2025, and the first delivered unit is to be integrated into the Israeli Air Force.

A laser concentrates energy on a target over time rather than launching a separate interceptor. That can lower the marginal cost of an engagement, but it does not create unlimited firing capacity. Laser operation depends on line of sight, maintaining aim on the target and the system’s power and cooling capacity. Atmospheric conditions can also affect the beam. These physical requirements mean it complements missile interceptors rather than replacing them for every situation.

## Development, testing and service

Reports about Iron Beam often mix milestones. Completion of tests showed successful interceptions under trial conditions; delivery in December 2025 marked the first system handed to the IDF. Neither milestone means every battery is already deployed across Israel or that the system can defeat every raid.

The Ministry’s [delivery announcement](https://mod.gov.il/en/press-releases/press-room/israel-mod-and-rafael-deliver-first-operational-high-power-laser-system-iron-beam-to-the-idf) names the partners and threats intercepted during testing. Its earlier [development update](https://www.mod.gov.il/en/press-releases/press-room/iron-beam-laser-system-development-complete-first-capability-delivery-to-idf-scheduled-for-december-30-2025) said initial operational capability was planned for the end of 2025. Iron Beam extends the layered defense described in [Israel’s missile-defense overview](https://hasbara.co.il/resources/israeli-defense-industry-rafael-elbit-systems-iai/israel-multi-tiered-missile-defense-engineering-and-history).
