# Israeli Gas and the EastMed Proposal

*EastMed is a proposed subsea pipeline route from eastern Mediterranean gas reserves through Cyprus and Crete to mainland Greece. It remains a proposed infrastructure project; EU listing and technical studies do not mean construction is financed or underway.*

EastMed is a proposed subsea pipeline from eastern Mediterranean gas reserves to mainland Greece via Cyprus and Crete. The European Commission’s project fiche describes the route and includes EastMed among projects retaining project-of-common-interest status under a regulatory derogation.

The Commission’s [project fiche](https://ec.europa.eu/assets/cinea/PCI/files/PCIFiche_15.2_1st_PCI_PMI_list.pdf) identifies the route. The Connecting Europe Facility supported technical studies of the project, as described in a [European Parliament answer](https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-9-2022-002084-ASW_EN.pdf).

## What the proposal would connect

The planned line would link offshore gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean to Greece, with a connection onward to the European network. It is one proposed option for moving regional gas. The EU lists it within energy infrastructure planning.

As of the Commission fiche updated in December 2025, EastMed appears among projects maintaining project-of-common-interest status under Article 24 derogation.

## Proposal versus operational exports

EastMed is not a completed pipeline. Israel already exports gas through existing regional infrastructure. The proposed route to Greece would require separate engineering, financing, permits and construction.

Its relevance to EU-Israel relations is energy planning, not a guaranteed supply commitment. The broader commercial relationship is covered in [EU-Israel trade](https://hasbara.co.il/resources/european-union-israel-relations-trade-politics-and-tensions/the-eu-israel-trade-balance-high-tech-and-industrial-integration), while the Association Agreement page explains the political and economic framework.
