# Temple Denial and “Al-Aqsa Is in Danger” Claims

*“Temple denial” describes statements rejecting or minimizing the Jewish Temples’ historical presence in Jerusalem. “Al-Aqsa is in danger” has been used in political mobilization; specific statements and episodes should be assessed in their own historical context.*

“Temple denial” is a term used for claims that the Jewish Temples did not stand in Jerusalem or that Jewish history at the Temple Mount is invented. The historical record identifies the First and Second Temples as central institutions of ancient Jewish life in Jerusalem; the Second Temple was destroyed by Rome in 70 CE. The site’s Jewish history is supported by ancient written accounts, later Jewish tradition, and archaeological evidence from Jerusalem. See [the evidence and its archaeological limits](https://hasbara.co.il/resources/dome-of-the-rock-and-al-aqsa-mosque-context-and-significance/mount-moriah-and-the-legacy-of-jewish-temples).

## What the phrase “Al-Aqsa is in danger” means

The phrase has appeared in political and religious rhetoric around Jerusalem’s holy sites. It can refer to a real fear about access, construction, or the future of Muslim holy buildings, and it has also been used to mobilize opposition to Israeli policies. A careful account identifies who used the phrase, when, and in response to which event rather than treating every use as the same claim.

One documented context is the 1920s, when disputes over Jewish prayer at the Western Wall and competing national claims in Jerusalem contributed to escalating tensions. In August 1929, violence spread from Jerusalem to other cities and communities; 133 Jews were killed across the country, including in Hebron and Safed. That toll and the spread of violence are documented in historical accounts, but a single phrase or person should not be presented as the sole cause of all violence.

## Separate rhetoric from the history of the site

Muslim religious concern for Al-Aqsa is longstanding and should not be conflated with false claims about Jewish history or with incitement to violence. The same precinct is sacred to Muslims and Jews for distinct historical and religious reasons. A 1925 Supreme Muslim Council guide even described the site’s identity with Solomon’s Temple as “beyond dispute”; the document records its authors’ wording and can be read alongside other historical evidence.

Claims about Israeli plans to damage the mosques should be checked against specific evidence. Israel maintains security authority at the compound, and the Waqf administers Muslim religious affairs there. The status quo policy allows non-Muslim visits but not non-Muslim prayer inside the compound.
